Much of the VO industry has moved towards the home studio. Instead of driving to your agent's or a casting agency to record your auditions, you do so from the comfort of your own home.
I have to say, it's nice to have this option; I've always wanted to have a job where I could go to work in my pajamas. But as much as I audition, there is always the challenge of self direction. Because when you go to work in your pajamas, there is no sound engineer or booth director to help guide you to your best performance. It's up to you to decide: Which take is your best one?
For those who have been in the industry for years, or who have the VO equivalent to perfect pitch, this is an innate skill, born either from years of practice or because it is ingrained in you. As a singer, I have great relative pitch; but I don't have perfect pitch. And while I'm a great listener (of other people's work), I'm still learning to pick out the nuances in my own performance that make one read better than the next.
So if you ask me if I'm a good listener - in life? Absolutely. In VO? I'm getting there.
