The amazing Steven Sondheim once wrote a song about "the art of making art" - about all the tiny little details that go into creating art...not just the creative piece, but the networking, the fundraising, the collaboration and numerous intangibles that artists go through to become "successful." The song is called "Putting it Together" and right now, I feel like that song is an accurate description of my life.
Building a career in any industry takes time & energy: the education and practice to prepare you for the work, the network of friends and supporters to introduce you into your chosen industry and act as your advocates & cheerleaders and the luck, tenacity, and sheer force of will to make things happen.
Once again, I find myself mustering up all the energy and support I can in order to create something new and different....bit by bit, piece by piece, part by part....the idea is that all these tiny things I'm doing every day will eventually build itself into something bigger.
Each step I take in the world of voiceover takes me a step closer to realizing my goals. Sometimes they are tiny, sometimes not. Taking classes & attending workshops to improve my skills. Producing my demos and website. Building my network, making friends & contacts within voiceover. Shopping my demos around to agencies, auditioning wherever & whenever I possibly can...it's all the tiny, mundane but important (or huge, not so mundane and super important) details that allow me to practice my chosen craft. Sometimes it takes more time (and energy) than I have (thank goodness for coffee), and I am grateful for the support & encouragement of my friends, family & mentors....their energy is more powerful than a case of Red Bull.
..."the Art of Making Art...is Putting it Together"
That's what counts.
