Until I have agency representation and union affiliation, I'm a freelance voiceover actor. Which means I am responsible for the entire process from start to finish:
- marketing my talents on my own and various websites
- finding, auditioning for and booking gigs
- negotiating rates with clients
- recording the gig & sending the files to the client
- invoicing and collections
Since I'm essentially a company of one, I have only myself to blame for what happened on a recent gig, in which I booked and recorded four characters but only sent three to my client: I should have checked the file. I would call it a "rookie mistake," but there's no excuse, and I feel stupid for having done it.
Now that file is lost on the recording studio's server, and I am spending an extra hour or two chasing it down, causing delays for my client. I sincerely hope that my talent and responsiveness is enough to keep me in the running for future work, but I wouldn't be surprised if I don't hear from these guys again. I don't really blame them.
Lesson learned: always check your files before you leave the recording studio. Kids, don't do this at home. Trust me, I will never let this happen again.
