With Easter right around the corner, you'd think I was talking about the Easter bunny, marshmallow peeps and egg hunting shenanigans. Not quite.
Just call me "hopalong." That's right, in my eagerness to take advantage of the warm spring day that was last Sunday, I went for a run. Or tried to anyway. My foot had another idea: on its way down the stairs to the beach path I love to jog, it "decided" to twist into itself, with a few sounds that only cereal should make. Snap, crackle, pop! YOWZA!!
Luckily a nice little old lady saw me & was kind enough to make sure I was okay and got back up the stairs that caused my downfall (literally). After I limped myself the few blocks back to my car, I drove to an urgent care clinic. The nice doctors took an x-ray and promptly declared my ankle sprained, not broken and prescribed, among other things: RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation & lots of it), Advil (and lots of it), a nifty thing called an air cast and a pair of crutches.
My roommate was nice enough to take me to the local pharmacy/medical supply store to purchase my new accessories and then I spent the rest of the day learning how to maneuver around on my crutches - two metal sticks guided only by my hands. I believe man evolved into upright beings for a reason: walking around on your hands can be a painful undertaking! My arm muscles are sore from the strain. (However, I've been told by those who've experienced the joy of crutches, that my arms will be as buff as Madonna's by the end of it. Joy!)
And my significant other was nice enough to come over after work and bring me dinner while I sat on the couch, ankle propped up by several pillows and surrounded by a cushion of ice.
I admit, I'm a little (ok, a LOT) bummed that my mobility has been temporarily curtailed by my attempt at running; I am a pretty independent, active person. I missed a lot of classes & activities this week, and will for a couple more while I heal. And forget about the salsa dancing I love so much. I guess to move faster, at some point, you just have to slow down and take help where it's offered. (I didn't expect to slow down quite this much, or need help quite this much.) I'm incredibly grateful to be surrounded by the kindness of strangers & loved ones as I work, drive, blog, twitter, etc., my way through this injury. In the meantime, I'm looking forward to a nice long weekend off, with RICE, my new spring accessories (ha!), a few loved ones nearby and maybe even an Easter basket filled with a chocolate bunny and a few marshmallow peeps. I'll hop right back to it, but next week. See you then!!
And Happy Easter/Passover! (is that "Eastover"?)
